Dental Visit: Fear vs. Awareness

Does the idea of a dental visit make your heart go ba-dump ba-dump and racy? Do your lips get dry, your eyes and extremities go shaky, and you are experiencing cold sweats? Welcome to the dental fear factor club! You are not alone! Studies and articles from around the world showed shreds of evidence of people fearing dental visits.

Here are the lists:

    • An article by Ann MacDonald revealed that “Fear of the dentist is incredibly common, with surveys estimating that it affects 13% to 24% of people around the world.”

    • Another article revealed that an estimate of 5-8% of Americans refrains from seeing the dentist out of fear, and 20% are so distressed that professional help will only be a choice if dental treatment is needed.
    • An article by Seb Evans pointed out that “More than a quarter (26%) of Brits have canceled or delayed a dental appointment due to fear of the dentist and 80% admits to being scared of the dentist.”
    • A website called uutiset reported that “Every third adult in Finland is frightened of visiting the dentist, with more women than men indicating their fears.

Those jitters, uneasy, creepy feeling is a typical response, especially before every dental visit. If those jitters limit you from seeking dental help and eventually harms your oral health, then it is alarming! Our oral cavity is as important as any body part.

An article by gmtoday mentioned Dr. John Triggs of Milwaukee Oral Surgery & Implants stating, “There are many established links between oral and systemic health. Untreated, periodontal disease, for example, can have a significant impact on everything from cardiovascular health to increase pregnancy risks.”

Early detection and prevention are always better than a cure. Our staff and dental team at Flex Dental are very much aware of your hesitation and uneasiness when it comes to seeking professional help. This is the very reason why we keep ourselves updated on the advances in our field.

We strive to give our patients better and advanced treatments with less discomfort. Remember that most dental procedures now are pain-free in comparison to procedures dated a few years back.

Also, remember that “Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” Fear is an unpleasant feeling caused by a perceived threat.

Dreadful feelings, doubts, and apprehensions will be eliminated when clients find a dental team who will always involve them with their treatments. At Flex Dental, we answer our patients’ queries, giving them a full understanding of procedures to be done, including the risks involved. This will then make room for a more relaxing, reassuring environment, a strengthened dentist and client relationship, and a healthier oral cavity and overall health.
